James was one of three children born to Samuel and Edith Rogerson Bloom. Sadly, James' father died when James was just 3 1/2 years of age. In 1927James married Hazel Emily Carnine, daughter of Herman and Pearl Brown Carnine. He and Hazel celebrated the birth of their first child, Delores June Bloom, in July of 1928, . In October of that same year, Delores passed away.
The 1930 Census shows that James and Hazel were no longer living together. Hazel was listed as "divorced" living with her parents, Herman and Pearl Brown Carnine; and James was living with his mother and step-father, Edith and Charles A Leusch.
In 1936 James married Josephine Mon, the daughter of Spanish immigrants, Fermin and Micaela Mon.
