It is with the secure joy in the knowledge of Jesus Christ that we celebrate the beautiful spirit and soul in the person of Betty Gwen Barber Hakey, who at the age of 83, peacefully passed from this world to be in the presence of God during the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019 at her home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The daughter of Clifford Lester Barber and Lazelle Izma (Paul) Barber, she was born in Quechee, Vermont on May 29th, 1935 on her Mothers 39th Birthday as the 7th of 8 children. She had two older half-sisters (Lettie and Ester) and a half-brother (Victor) from her mother’s first marriage (who after being widowed, moved from Canada to Vermont). During Lazelle’s marriage to Clifford, Victor was adopted by Clifford and then three sisters (Violet, Mildred and Jean) were born before Betty, to be followed by a younger brother (George). She grew up in the Cavendish, VT area and she graduated High School in Chester, VT.

She married Earnest Stanley Hakey on December 24th, 1955 in Cavendish, VT while he was home on military holiday leave from the U.S. Marine Corps. Eventually settling down in Grafton, VT on the family farm and then in Bellows Falls, Vt, it was there that they raised four sons who survive them: Ernest S. Hakey III of North Reading, MA; Phillip A. Hakey and his wife Jeannette of Virginia Beach, VA; Mark A. Hakey and his wife Mary of Sterling, VA; and Leslie W. Hakey and his wife Kristen of Shelburne, VT. In retirement, they traveled for a time up and down the east coast, and resided in Wilson, NC for a few years, before returning to East Alstead, NH, in order to live close to Earnest’s younger brother Bertie and Rita Hakey for their final years together. During that time, they became very close to many of those family members and it was there that Betty’s beloved husband of 57+ years predeceased her on August 16, 2013. After Earnest passed, Betty moved to live her remaining years with Phillip and Jeannette in Virginia Beach, VA. And once there, she enjoyed the company of more new friends. While she had a loving relationship with her children and their families, she also missed seeing all the many friends and relatives from across New England, especially at the Barber family reunions.

The grandchildren of Betty & Earnest held a special place in her heart, and she was glad that she lived long enough to establish a personal relationship with each one of them. In Virginia Beach, VA are Bryan & Heidi Hakey, and his younger sister Janel Hakey & her Fiancé Jacob Airth. In Burlington, VT resides Mackenzie Hakey and her younger sister Madison Hakey (currently at College in Denver, CO). And, in Sterling, VA are the youngest granddaughters Lillian Hakey & Katrina Hakey, who loved to visit their “Mimi”. Betty especially enjoyed being pen pals when visits were not possible with her grandchildren, and there were several dedicated telephone callers with whom she cherished communicating.

Betty is survived by her older sister, Violet Hudder of Bridgeport, CT and her younger brother & his wife, George and Carol Barber of Waterbury, VT; the other siblings having passed. With each one she had a special relationship. There are numerous nieces & nephews, and other relatives of Earnest and Betty’s as well as many friends through the years whom she loved and kept in her prayers.

It seemed that if Betty met you, then you became a part of her family and were treated as such. Personal relationships always meant more to Betty than material things. As a result, there are many “adopted” brothers, sisters, daughters and sons that make up her extended family. And, she was very proud of whom her children and grandchildren have become.

A graveside remembrance celebration for Betty will be held this summer at the Burgess Cemetery in Grafton, VT so that her ashes may be placed alongside those of Earnest. At Betty’s request, please do not send flowers or memorial contributions. Instead, you may share your loving thoughts and memories via the Memorial Wall tab.
