LAMPE, L. KATHERINE, 94, passed away January 26, 2019, at Swedish Medical Center. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Vernon Val Gregg and Lala Freytag, she moved to Denver from her home in McCook, Nebraska, in 1943 to train as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital. Part of her training took her to Fitzsimons Army Hospital where she met her future husband, John M. Lampe.

With her husband, she was an active member of the American School Health Association and participated in writing several health education books. She received many awards, including Colorado School Nurse of the Year in 1987.

From 1971 to 1990, she worked as a school nurse and health educator at Campus Middle Unit, Cherry Creek School District #5. Her door was always open for sniffles, tummy aches, skinned knees and bruises. Students and faculty alike sought her out for her medical expertise and sympathetic ear. Always the organizer, she hosted reunions for her Campus Middle Unit colleagues as well her nursing school classmates for the rest of her life.

A lifelong learner, she added to her RN with a bachelor’s degree in science, with honors, from St. Francis University in Joliet, Illinois, in 1990.

Contributions may be made to the Lake County Public Library, 1115 Harrison Avenue, Leadville, CO 80461.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
