The alumni office learned that Mrs. Baker passed away on January 28, 2019.

Mrs. Baker was both an Alumna of Howard Payne University and a celebrated member of the University's faculty from 1962 until her retirement in 1998. Mrs. Baker was living in Granbury, TX.

The Memorial Service for Sara Baker will be held at Grace Chapel, HPU, on Saturday, April 27th at 1:00pm with a reception immediately following.
 

In 2003 she was awarded the Medal of Service by the University and the Alumni Association. The proclamation at that time offered the following:

Mrs. Sara Baker began her service to Howard Payne University in 1962 with her appointment as Associate Professor in the School of Music. Mrs. Baker taught a variety of classes in the vocal department including applied voice, voice diction and vocal pedagogy.

She served as director of the Heritage Singers from 1987-1994 and traveled thousands of miles with the group as they performed throughout Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, California and Mexico. In 1994, she organized Heritage Celebration, a reunion in which more than 90 members of the group returned to reminisce about their experiences at Howard Payne University. Mrs. Baker has also participated in many of the HPU musicals including The King and I and Kiss Me, Kate.

Mrs. Baker's acts of service extend beyond the doors of Howard Payne University to include her church and her community. She contributed greatly to the music ministries of Early, First Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Brownwood; First Christian Church and Woodcreek Baptist Church.

After 36 years of service to Howard Payne University, Mrs. Baker and her husband, Dr. George Baker who also taught in the School of Music, retired in 1998.
