Bernida "Bea" Frye, 85, of 2015 Garfield Ave. died Wednesday, May 30, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Nemmers officiating and the Rev. Tom Sherman concelebrating. Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1921, in Springbrook, Iowa, daughter of John R. and Appolonia (Sturm) Portz. She married William Frye on Aug. 5, 1943, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, Iowa.

She was a 60 year member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and was very active within the various organizations there, especially the Altar Society. She also was a member of the Mother's Clubs.

In her early years, Bea graduated from beauty school, and was employed as a beautician, a telephone operator, and as a riveter at Boeing Aircraft during World War II.

For most of her life, she was a homemaker, and will be remembered as a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bea was a humble person who was always a pleasure to be around. Her faith in God was a constant in her life.

Surviving are her children, Sandra (Anthony) Amberg, of Dubuque, Bill (Janas) Frye Jr., of Dubuque, Ann (Paul) Lewis, of Brodhead, Wis., James Frye, of Aurora, Colo., and Dennis Frye, of Dyersville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren with two on the way; two brothers, Earl (Marge) Portz, of Albia, Iowa, and M.J. "Bud" (Madonna) Portz, of Dubuque; and a sister, Imy Sherman, of East Dubuque, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William, on March 28, 1990; three brothers, Cyril, Norman and Adelbert; a sister, Sylvia; three stepbrothers; and two grandchildren.
