Born Nov. 11, 1939, in his lifelong home on S. Wayne St., he was the son of the late James F. Lukens Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth “Ning” Miller. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Esther L. Kline and Hanna E. Loucks, of Lewistown.

He is survived by: his wife, Rita Gay Lukens, whom he married in 1961; his daughters, Teresa A. “Luke” was a graduate of Lewistown High School, class of 1957, where he sang in the choir and lettered in soccer. He continued his education at George Washington University and was a graduate of Penn State. He was also awarded a Fellowship at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Jim developed his first roll of photographic film while in high school and was employed at James Keppler’s portrait studio. He learned photojournalism skills from the late Charles W. Swartz then secured full-time employment in the photography department of the FBI where he regularly was called on to photograph current presidents of the United States, attorneys general, and visiting dignitaries.

The U.S. government credentialed Jim for later employment at Standard Steel in Burnham, as a metallographer and microscopist in the iron and steel industry.

Jim returned to photography at Penn State’s Graphic and Photographic Services where he was promoted to Assistant Director, then Director.
