from The Republic, Meyersdale, Somerset Co, Pennsylvania, published 4 Dec 1947, Thu: "John William Menges passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Countryman, Berlin, R.D. 3, on Saturday, Nov. 29. Had he lived until April he would have been 90 years old.
He was a son of Jeremiah and Rebecca (Fair) Menges and early in life he married Ellen Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Miller. Mrs. Menges died twenty years ago.
He is survived by two sons, Harry E. Menges, Berlin and Merle J. Menges, Englewood, Cal., and one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Countryman, at whose home he died. He also left five grand-children and six great-grandchildren.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Menges lived in Berlin for two years, and then moved to the farm where he spent the rest of his life. After the passing of his wife he made his home with his daughter who cared for him tenderly during his declining years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Berlin, and served on the church council for 40 years as trustee, deacon, and elder.
He was a successful farmer and was highly respected in the community in which he lived. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., at Johnson & Son's funeral home, Rev. Robert S. Nagle officiating. Interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Berlin."
