Carl “Baldy” Bates, age 86, passed away early Saturday morning, January 26, 2019, in his home. He died of a broken heart, despite the fact that his family loved him well through his grief. Dolores “Tis” Bates, his beloved bride of nearly 62 years, preceded him in death on July 30, 2018.

Carl was born on March 9, 1932 in Warren Township to Orville and Carmen (Borden) Bates. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Carl and Dolores were married on December 23, 1956. He retired from Indiana & Michigan Electric Company in 1990. He and Dolores enjoyed many years of camping, traveling, spending winter months in Florida, and spending time with family.

Both Carl and Dolores are sadly missed by their loving family: son, Randy (Kim) Bates; daughter, Janice (Nick) Korstange; grandchildren, Joseph Eskridge, Jessica Eskridge, Ellyn Lombardi, Erin Eitler, Kyle Bates, Nicole Ryan, Ryan Sokolowski, Dena Anderson, Charlie Korstange; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Maude (Fred) Miller; sister-in-law, Jackie Andrzejewski; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and loving wife, Carl was preceded in death by sister, Blanche Andrzejewski; brothers, Andrus, Orville Jr., Milbourn “Tink,” and Noron “Jack” Bates; and his daughter-in-law, Barbie Bates.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Redeemer Church, 1234 Fulkerson Road, Niles, MI. Friends may gather with the family from 10:00-11:00am on Saturday at the church prior to services. Military honors will be rendered immediately following the service. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Li-Fraumeni Syndrome Association (LFSA) in honor of Carl and Dolores’ granddaughter, Erin: LFSA Association, P.O. Box 6458, Holliston, MA 01746 or at www.lfsassociation.org.
