At age 96, Helen McKenzie Bator died in her sleep at Sandalwood Manor, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, on Friday August 25th.

She was the daughter of Daniel G. and Helen Jones McKenzie of Jackson, Tennessee. Raised in Tennesee and Alabama, she was educated by Catholic nuns before attending Spring Hill College and graduating from the University of Alabama, having studied music and art. She married George T. Bator, of Cle Elum, Washington, and they moved to Golden, Colorado, to raise a family of four children: George T. Junior, Robert E., H. Theresa, and Joseph E. Bator. George taught mining engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, and Helen immersed herself in the community, where she taught piano, helped found the Golden Symphony Orchestra, and performed with it for several years. She was a leader and member of Mt. Lookout Daughters of the American Revolution, PEO philanthropic organization, and the historic Golden Fortnightly Book Club. She served as an organist at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, and brother. Surviving are her brothers, Robert W. McKenzie and J. Thomas McKenzie, three sons, grandchildren: George T. Bator III, Bruce C. Bator, Ellen T. Bator, Catherine R. Bator, and Robert M. Bator. She is further survived by her great-grandchild, Theresa G. Arnold, as well as many treasured nephews and nieces.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Golden, Colorado at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, the 1st of September. Interment will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers or other memorials, it is requested that donations be made to The Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery, 916 Convent Road, N.E., Cullman, Alabama 35055.
