Mr Ralph Bethel Childs Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 16, 1948 to Ralph B. Childs, Sr. and Helen (Carter) Childs.

Mr. Childs was reared in Detroit and attended the Detroit Public Schools. He was a good student and excellent speller, having won the Regional Detroit Public School Spelling Bee. He graduated from Chadsey High School in 1966.

Ralph, affectionately called "Pete" by his family, was confirmed at age 13 at Grace Episcopal Church and served actively as an acolyte and in various other youth groups. He became a member of Ebenezer AME Church later in his adult life.

Mr Childs was an accomplished table tennis player. He won the Michigan State Junior Championship (boys 14 and under) two successive years. In 1962, he won the United States Junior Championship. Later that same year, he captured the Canadian Men's Championship. The following year, Ralph was selected along with eleven other members to travel abroad and represent the United States in Olympic type competition against Sweden, France, Germany and Denmark. He amassed over 200 trophies during his table tennis career.

Ralph graduated from Detroit Police Academy, October 8, 1970. He received a commendation from the Department in 1973 for the apprehension of an armed criminal following a high-speed car chase. He served courageously and dutifully until his untimely death.

He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter's Juliana and Tracey; sister, Ms. Michelle Bradford; parents, Helen and Ralph B. Childs, Sr.; two grandmothers, Mrs. Gussie Carter and Mrs. Louise Reed; one grandfather, Mr Alfred Childs; one brother-in-law, Mr. Donald Bradford; two nephews, Brandon and Jason Bradford; two great-aunts, 3 great-uncles, 5 aunts, three uncles and and a host of other relatives and friends.
