Ms. Helen Jean (Shines) Bowens, 64, passed away peacefully at her home in South Bend on the evening of Thursday, January 24, 2019. Helen was born on February 19, 1954 in Benton Harbor, MI to LeRoy and Mamie Lee (Barnhill) Shines.

Helen was a lifelong resident of South Bend, having moved to the area from Benton Harbor very early in her life. She was a faithful employee of St. Paul’s Retirement Community, working as a nurse and dietary aide, retiring after 32+ years of service. Helen was the proud mother of three, grandmother, beloved aunt, sister, extended relative and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her children, Terry Ivory of South Bend, Jaywana Tate of South Bend and Sean Porter of South Bend; grandchildren Myriah, Medrano and Antonio Medrano and Kyla Riffle, all at home; special nephew Adrian Price of South Bend; sisters Mary (Henry) Barnes of South Bend and Jacqueline Brown of South Bend; brother Johnny Shines of South Bend; close friend Porshe Gordon of South Bend; special friend Rick Wood of Indianapolis and Arletha Moore of South Bend; as well as a host of extended family and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, dear aunt and uncle, Helen (Shines) and James Purchas.

Helen enjoyed spending time with her family, her puzzle books, horror movies and loved her cats, “Skittles” and “Tines”. She also never missed her episodes of Law & Order: SVU or Little House on the Prairie. She loved to take long walks and she especially loved being retired.

Services for Helen Jean (Shines) Bowen will be held on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend IN 46628. Friends may call on the family for an hour prior to service at the funeral home. Pastor Geoffrey Carter to officiate the service.
