Funeral services for Rachel Hannah Thornton, 25, of Birmingham will be Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 1:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Bumpers Funeral Home with Rev. Lyle Meador officiating. The Eulogy will be given by her Aunt Celeste Ford. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be at Bumpers Funeral Home, Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Rachel Hannah Thornton, the light of our world, was born October 28, 1993, in Jasper, Alabama. She was beautiful, talented, and smart. She was a champion of the underdog. She attended Pelham High School and graduated from Patrician Academy, the class of 2012. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with dual degrees in social work and psychology. She was a wonderful daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend. She spent many hours advocating for LGBTQ+ Community, the homeless, and for social justice.

She left this world January 24, 2019, in Birmingham, Alabama, and she will forever be missed by all who loved her and the community she served.

She is survived by her mother Dinah Hollister Denison and step-father Mike Denison; paternal grandfather Earl (Phyllis) Thornton; paternal step-grandmother Cathy Denison; paternal step-grandfather Mort (Yvonne) Denison; paternal step-great-grandmother Lois Grant; boyfriend Tyler Hoyt; Aunt Celeste Hollister Ford; Aunt Carolyn (Robin) Woodard; Uncle Neal “Rick” (Shelley) Hollister; Uncle Kelly (Jamie) Hollister; cousins Carson Ford, Cooper Ford; Amanda Thomas (Doug), Holly Hollister, Brian Hollister, Michael Hollister, Kevin Hollister, Corbett Hollister (April), Ryan Hollister (Lauren), Kaitlin Hollister, Alicia Woodard, Misty Woodard, and Liz Devers; and a host of other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Rachel is preceded in death by her father Robert Jarrod “Rod” Thornton; maternal grandparents Neal F. and Dianne Doggett Hollister; maternal great-grandparents Tony and Ina Ruth Doggett; paternal grandmother Bernice O’Rear; and paternal great-grandmother Jewel O’Rear; paternal great-grandparents Robert and Julia Thornton; and Uncle Gerald Youngblood.
