Jack Watson Haynes

Jack Watson Haynes, 79, passed away on September 10, 2018 at Baptist Hospital in Columbus, MS. Jack was born in Birmingham, AL and grew up in southeastern Alabama, before moving to Jackson, MS. He made his home in Starkville from the time since he attended the university as a student. Mr. Haynes was a graduate of Hinds Jr. College, and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Entomology from Mississippi State University. He was a retired entomologist with the USDA, and was on the team that eradicated the boll weevil. Mr. Haynes was published in a number of scientific journals and in the National Geographic magazine. Jack was a member of First Baptist Church in Starkville, where he was an active member of the Bain Sunday School class. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and loved fishing, gardening and bowling. He loved country music and his name was immortalized in The Statler Brothers' classic song, "The Class of '57", written by his high school classmate. He loved Mississippi State University sports, especially basketball, baseball, and football. He was a faithful husband, father, and grandfather, and dearly loved his wife and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyce Watson Haynes and Mary Vester Smith Haynes; and his brother, Dennis Haynes.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carole Henry Haynes of Starkville, MS; daughter, Charlotte Pickering (Byron) of Sulligent, AL; son, Father Scott A. Haynes of Chicago, IL; sisters, Judy White and Brenda Prince; brothers, Joe Haynes, Mike Haynes and Danny Haynes; and two grandchildren, Jackson & Bethany Pickering.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, 2018 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Byron Pickering, Dr. Chip Stevens, and Rev. Clifton Curtis. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Morgan Chapel Cemetery in Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The Father's Child Ministry, P. O. Box 9251, Columbus, MS 39705 or to the audio tech ministry fund at First Baptist Church, 106 E. Lampkin St., Starkville, MS 39759.
