Michael was born in Gardiner ME to Harry and Rachael Fotakis. He had two younger siblings Debra and Denis. When he was younger he would love to go to the movies with Grammy Gordon to watch westerns which led to his love of Western movies and TV shows. His father was in the service which allowed the family to travel all over the world including Libya, Germany, Montana, and Illinois. Michael continue his travels when he joined the army in 1959. When he was stationed in Germany, he met his wife Gerti at the age of 20 and she was only 18. They were married a few months later and had two children Mike and Gary. He got out of the service in the late 60's and became a PGA pro and golf instructor in Virginia where he lived for 30 years. They eventually moved to Texas to be closer to their children where he retired.

Michael's big joy in life, besides his family, was his love of golf. He started playing at a young age and was shooting in the low 70s when he was 16. He played in numerous golf tournaments all around the States and won many. He loved golf and almost always had the Golf Channel on at home 24/7.
