July 17, 2009 Bryant "By" M. Dates Jr., of Syracuse, died July 17, 2009, at the age of 84. By was surrounded by his loving family when he peacefully passed away. He had endured a brave battle with a long illness. Born and raised in Ithaca, By served during WWII in the Navy Seabees. He earned his degree at the University of Buffalo, and he retired as a division controller from Agway after a 40-year career. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Nottingham Knolls/Drumlins Country Club and served as director of the Syracuse Golf Association, where he was instrumental in the success of the USGA course rating program in Central New York. By belonged to the Ithaca Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. As a communicant of Holy Cross Church, he was a member of the funeral altar servers group. By leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Dower Dates; his four children, Nancy Tourville, Susan Dates (Dennis Grover) Marnell Socci (Thomas) and James Dates (Shelly); eight grandchildren, David and Kristen Tourville, Stephanie, Thomas Jr. and Matthew Socci, Erinn Grover, and Ella and Claire Dates; brother, Harris Dates; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. July 20 at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 East Genesee St., Syracuse. Family and friends will celebrate his life on July 21 at 9 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 4112 East Genesee Street, Syracuse. Contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY or Holy Cross Church.
