Edwin “Bud” F. Cox, 89, of Columbus, NE, formerly of Cedar Rapids, NE passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, NE.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, NE with Rev. Vern Olson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, NE with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, Dan Cox American Legion Post #44, and American Legion Riders. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus, NE. Visitation will resume Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the church in Cedar Rapids, NE.
Edwin “Bud” Frederick Cox was born November 30, 1929, on the Cox Family Farm southeast of Cedar Rapids, NE, to Gilbert Morris and Emeline Christine (Peterson) Cox.
Edwin attended rural school District #15 for grades one thru six. The family moved into Cedar Rapids, NE in March of 1941. He graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1947. He was salutatorian of his class.
Bud attended Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, NE from June 1947 to February 1948. Then he worked in the Cedar Rapids State Bank until May of 1951.
Bud entered the United States Army in May of 1951 serving until May of 1953, during the Korean War. In June of 1953 he resumed working in the Cedar Rapids State Bank until August of 1954.
Bud attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE, graduating with a B.A. Degree in Business. During this time, he also attended some classes at the University of Nebraska. He then worked at the Lincoln Public School Business Office until 1961. He returned to Cedar Rapids to work again in the Cedar Rapids State Bank until October of 1984. In 2006 Bud moved to Columbus to the Crown Villa Independent Living.
Bud was a member of the Cedar Rapids United Methodist Church. He held several offices including 22 years as the Financial Secretary, 18 years as Church Treasurer, and 4 years as Lay member to the Churches Annual Conference. He was a member of the Dan Cox Post #44 at Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Community Club, serving as Treasurer for several years. Bud enjoyed traveling, visiting many of the states, both coasts, Florida, the Mexican border, Canada, and in 1984 took a trip to Europe. He was also a Civil War buff and enjoyed visiting the Civil War Battle Field at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where his great-grandfather Gilbert H. Cox fought.
Bud is survived by nephews: Jerome (Janice) Cox of California; James (Sue) Cox of Cedar Rapids, NE; Larry (Jean) Cox of Henderson, NE; Gilbert (Karen) Zaruba of Columbus, NE; David (Nancy) Zaruba of Norfolk, NE; Samuel (Gerri) Zaruba of Wood River, NE; grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: William and wife Dorothy; Maurice and wife Marjorie; and an infant; sisters: Margaret (Thomas) Zaruba, and Betty Cox.
