Velma V. Rogers, 85, Brier Hill. Funeral services for Velma V. Rogers, 85, of Brier Hill, will be held on Tuesday (Apr. 13, 2010) at noon at the First Congregational Church of Morristown in Brier Hill with Pastor David Sheppard officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ingham Cemetery. ??Calling hours will be held on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home , Ogdensburg. Velma died peacefully at her home on Friday morning, April 9 where she had lived for the past 59 years. Her two daughters were at her side when she laid aside this earthly mantle and entered her heavenly rest. ?? Velma was born on June 14, 1924 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Richard and Edna (Lowery) Brooks. She attended the Brier Hill Union School and graduated from there in 1942. She was married to Walter C. “Cap” Rogers on December 21, 1951 at her parent’s home in Brier Hill. She worked as a housekeeper for a few years, then from 1945-1951 she was employed by Randall’s Manufacturing. She was a supervisor making uniforms for all the state hospitals and operated a felling machine, putting buttons and hooks on pant suits. Velma took the Kurry Bus Lines from Brier Hill to Ogdensburg each day for $5 a week. ?? From 1976 to 1980, she was employed as a baker at the Coffee Kitchen on Black Lake that was formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rollins. People came from miles around for her special homemade pies and chicken-and-biscuit Sunday dinners. ?? In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Velma grew and sold vegetables and flowers and was well known for her “baker’s dozen” fresh-picked corn. She grew marigolds and petunias in her upstairs for sale in the spring, and was renown for her green thumb and beautiful gardens and wonderful homemade jams. ?? She loved nature and being outdoors, teaching respect and love of nature for all God’s creatures and many beloved pets to her daughters. Many times she would sit in her yard watching barn swallows sing on the telephone wires and look at her garden and flowers and say “we have so much to be thankful for.” ?? Velma is survived by two daughters, Jane and Barbara Louise, and a granddaughter, Natassia Marie. She was predeceased in 1993 by her husband, Walter, of 43 years, and a daughter Mary Lou in 2005. ?? She was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Morristown all her life, and was a faithful friend, loving mother and a gentle example to many of what love, patience and understanding can accomplish in one’s life.
