Dennis began his professional career as an engineer and financial analyst with AT&T subsidiary Mountain Bell, first in Rapid City and then in Sioux Falls, Omaha and Denver. During the late 1970s and early 1980s he was heavily involved with the complex regulatory issues associated with the breakup of AT&T. He retired from USWest in 1991 and moved back to Rapid City, where he worked nearly 20 years as Safety Manager and HR administrator for Heavy Constructors, the largest diversified construction firm in Western South Dakota and surrounding states. Among the significant projects he was involved with were large-scale safety enhancements for the Yates Shaft at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (former Homestake Mine) in Lead, several ethanol plants, and railroad bridges for the coal transport system in Wyoming. He was widely recognized as a safety expert and held many OSHA and MSHA credentials as safety trainer certifications.
Dennis was an avid auto, boat and motorcycle enthusiast, starting at age 10 on the farm with a homemade motorbike powered with a washing machine engine. He also enjoyed hiking, camping and genealogy. One Dennis and Susan's favorite places was Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills, and for many summers they berthed their boat there. Dennis owned and refurbished many cars over the years, but his favorite was clearly a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme into which he mounted a GM LS3 engine. He enjoyed showing this car at meets around the Hills. Dennis took many motorcycle road trips with close friends; again he had a favorite bike among the several that he owned: a 1989 Honda Hurricane 1000cc. In later life he developed an interest in genealogy and visited many sites in the US and Canada for research. He and Susan also made two trips to Ireland tracking the Costello family ancestry. But without doubt his greatest interest and joy was always his family, especially his three beloved granddaughters.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and infant son. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Susan, sons Scott (Christy) and Jeffery Hammond, and granddaughters Anya, Abby and Ella, all of Rapid City, his brother David (Diane) Hammond of Highlands Ranch, CO, sister Barbara Hammond (Steve Brown) of Seguin, TX, sister-in-law Kathy (Dan) Staton of Rapid City, and brother-in-law John (Julie) Costello Rapid City, as well as many nephews and nieces.
A Christian funeral mass was held for Dennis at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Rapid City January 25, 2019, with inurnment of ashes at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
