Derrick L. Spencer (better known as “DJ Heavy”) transitioned from his life here on earth on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital. Derrick was born on November 7, 1973 to Ervin and Evelyn Spencer. Derrick was educated in the Chesapeake Public School System and graduated from Indian River High School where he was a member of the Marching Band and several athletic teams. Growing up, Derrick was known for being very energetic and daring which caused everyone in the community to become very familiar with him. Derrick gained an affinity for the drums at an early age and became the church drummer at Bibleway Holiness Church under the leadership of his grandfather Bishop William J. Faison. His musical and rhythmic expertise soon sparked an interest and passion for Disc Jockey. His talent as a Disc Jockey quickly gained him recognition and the name “DJ Heavy” for which he was affectionately referred to by friends, fans, and members of the community.

Derrick leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Ervin and Evelyn Spencer; four children, Kourtni (Marvetta Tann), Xavier, Shelya, and Althenia (Magaret Reid); three special loves, LaCondre' and Marsherea Tann, and Gabriel Reid; Grandparents, William and Mildred Faison; five siblings, Courtney, Curtis, Lisa, Antoine and Robin; a niece; Anaeja Spencer, a nephew Galento Brownson; a long-time special friend Jada Vaughan and her three children JaKara, Carlos, and Jaden Vaughan and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A Viewing will be held, Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Avenue. A funeral will be held, 11am, Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Bibleway Holiness Church, 2520 Dexter Street, Chesapeake, VA. Interment at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Road, Chesapeake, VA.
