He enlisted in Warrenton, Virginia, in the summer of 1780 as a substitute for Peter Crim in the company of Captain Frances Triplett. He marched to Hillsborough, North Carolina, where he entered the brigade of Colonel Morgan. After the battle of Cowpens, he was detached to Fauquier under Lieutenant Dearin, where he arrived in March 1781 and was discharged. In 1831, he was awarded a yearly pension of eighty dollars for his war services. He married Esther Potts and was one of the early settlers in Mason County, West Virginia.
