Fred is the son of Bernard and Bernadina (Hellebusch) Kopmann, ninth of ten children. Shortly after the turn of the century he spent a couple of years in California as a cowboy. He returned to Augusta, MO to run the family farm, and married Martha Struckhoff on November 8, 1911. In 1945 he sold the farm and moved to town because it was difficult to find hired hands during the War. He was very active in his community, including a career as the town Santa Claus. He lived at the house at 164 Jackson St. for the rest of his days.

He is father to Wanda DiNapoli, Laurie Freihaut, Millie Koenen, Dorothy Bolzenius, and Mary Lou Kargus.

He is grandfather to Judy Zell, Susan Berger, Lois Fehrenbacher, Fred Koenen, Joyce Simons, James Kargus Jr., Joan Unnerstall, Michael DiNapoli, Gary Kargus, Janet Adkins, Robert Freihaut, Daniel DiNapoli, Richard Kargus, Joseph Koenen, Ann Bolzenius, Kathy Buxton, and Mark Kargus.
