John Earl Seelig, 94, passed away, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019.

He was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, Dec. 11, 1924. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1942 and received the Bachelor of Science degree and the Doctor of Humanities degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He received the Master of Religious Education degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

In 1947, he married Virginia Garrett, daughter of the late Congressman and Mrs. Clyde Garrett. Virginia was a professional singer and voice professor at the seminary for 27 years.

Dr. Seelig served as Vice President for Public Affairs at Southwestern Seminary for three decades, 1960-1990. He worked in the areas of public relations, fundraising, alumni affairs, student recruitment and related activities. During his tenure, he was part of the administrative team that added eight major buildings and built enrollment to over 5,000 students making it the largest seminary in the world. When he retired the trustees dedicated The John and Virginia Seelig Banquet Room recognizing their combined service of 57 years.

A lover of horses, Dr. Seelig became involved in an annual horseback ride in Colorado, the Roundup Riders of the Rockies. He belonged to several horse related clubs and owned and raised Arabian horses. Dr. Seelig joined the board of directors of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in 1988 and named Honorary Vice President for having been a member for over 25 years.

Friends describe John Seelig as a loving family man who had a gift for making and caring for friends. He was a man of uncommon energy, zest for living and incredible generosity. He was a man of honesty, loyalty and integrity. Most important of all, he was a man of ever-deepening faith. His real passion was in Bible study and teaching. In addition to serving as a staff member at several churches, he loved teaching Sunday School. He taught Young Married Adults at Travis Avenue Baptist church for 15 years and the Early Bird Sunday School Class at Southcliff Baptist Church for 33 years.

Preceded in death by wife, Virginia Garrett Seelig; son, Steve Seelig; and granddaughter, Corianna Seelig-Gustafson.
Survivors: Son, Dr. Timothy Garrett Seelig; daughter-in-law, Bonita Seelig; son-in-law, Dan England; grandchildren, Stephanie and Jeffery Richardson, John Mark and Laura Seelig, Judson and Juliana Crawford, and Dr. Clay Gustafson; five great-grandchildren, Will Richardson, Jake Richardson, Clara Skye Seelig-Gustafson, Bowen Seelig, and Eden Crawford.
