An Arbuckle native with a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Jan. 10.

Natalie Corona, 22, had been responding to a traffic collision when she was suddenly ambushed by a bystander. She had only been patrolling on her own for a few weeks, and had graduated from the police academy last summer.

The funeral for a fallen Davis police officer and Arbuckle native is scheduled for Friday morning.

Natalie Corona, 22, was shot and killed Thursday while responding to a vehicle collision. She was a rookie and had just completed field training weeks earlier, though she comes from a long line of law enforcement family – her father, Merced Corona, retired from the Colusa County Sheriff's Office after 26 years of service.

Corona's funeral is set for Friday morning at the UC Davis Activities and Recreation Center, or ARC (232 ARC, 760 Orchard Road). The service is open to the public, though parking is limited, according to a Davis Police Department press release. Parking attendants will be on-site. Law enforcement is asked to arrive by 9 a.m.

A law enforcement procession will immediately follow the service and will finish at the location of the graveside service in Arbuckle. The grave side service will take place at the Arbuckle Cemetery (400 State Highway 99 west), and the reception will take place at Charter Oaks (437 Charter Oaks, Arbuckle).

The Yuba City community is hosting a candlelight vigil in honor of Corona as well.

The candlelight vigil will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Yuba City Police Department (1545 Poole Blvd.). The ceremony is expected to last 15 minutes with comments from Mayor and former California Highway Patrol captain Shon Harris, a prayer by Yuba City Police chaplain Robert Fischetti and a group singing "Amazing Grace." The event will take place rain or shine, according to a press release from Harris and Yuba City Police Chief Rob Landon.

Letters of appreciation to law enforcement officers attending Officer Corona's funeral will be collected at the vigil and delivered to the End of Watch fund. Letters of condolence for the Davis Police Department and the Corona family will also be collected and delivered.

Rolling Stone Pizza's "Slice of Respect" will be raising funds with 100 percent of all sales going to Corona's family. Fundraising will take place from 11 a.m. until they're sold out at New Earth Market (1475 Tharp Road) on Wednesday before the vigil.

It was also reported that a vigil was conducted Tuesday evening in downtown Arbuckle at LaVanche Hursh Park.

A suspect approached the scene and opened fire, striking Officer Corona. Firefighters from a station directly across from the incident scene responded immediately and began life-saving efforts. Although Natalie died at the scene [Yolo County] as a result of being shot multiple times; her body was transported to UC Davis Medical Center [Sacramento County] where she was pronounced.

The suspect ran from the scene, prompting a manhunt throughout downtown Davis. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to assist, surrounding a home near 5th and E Streets. Just before 1:00am, officers entered the home where they found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officer Natalie Corona, age 22, graduated from the police academy in July 2018, and completed field training shortly before Christmas. She is described as an eager rookie who started with the department in 2016 as a Community Service Officer. Officer Corona is survived by her parents. This is the first Line of Duty loss in 60 years for the Davis Police Department.

Natalie was a member of a large law enforcement family. wanted to be a cop for as long as anyone she knew can remember. Her family – and a sense of duty – drove her to put on the uniform.

She was a high school homecoming queen and the daughter of a cop. When the funding for her position with the Davis Police Department ran out, Corona took jobs at a fruit stand and as a waitress so she could afford to volunteer with the department.

She had a ring, black with blue center, like the blue line. She wore it on her ring finger because 'I'm married to the job' she would say." - Tessa Corona, relative of Natalie Corona.

The Memorial Service for Davis Police Officer Natalie Corona will be Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11 A.M. at the Activities and Recreation Center on the UC Davis campus.

Corona's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the UC Davis ARC Pavilion and is expected to last approximately one hour.

Following the service, a funeral procession will take Corona to her hometown of Arbuckle. Streets and highways along the procession route will be briefly closed.

The procession will leave the Pavilion and head north on La Rue Road. It will proceed to Russell Boulevard, head north on Anderson Road and then head west on Covell Boulevard to Highway 113.

The procession will lead north on Highway 113 to Woodland, where it will merge on I-5 and continue to Arbuckle. After the memorial service on Friday, a law enforcement procession will take Officer Corona's body from UC Davis to her final resting place in Arbuckle.

Today, alongside her family, members of the Davis City Council, the Davis City Manager's Office, the Davis Police Department and the Davis Fire Department, and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry attended the unveiling of the highway signs honoring Officer Natalie Corona that will be posted on I-5 in her hometown of Arbuckle. A 5 mile stretch of I-5 has now been named the "Officer Natalie Corona Memorial Highway".
