Patricia Jane Ritter (Worth)
Passed away on January 16, 2019 in the loving care of her family. Patty was born in Jackson, Michigan on January 10, 1965 to William and Audrey (Forbes) Worth. She was the tenth of eleven children.
Patty graduated from the University of Michigan in 1987 with a B.A. in English and Communications. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and found life-long friendships with many of her sorority sisters. She graduated from Wayne State University Law School in 1990 and immediately began practicing law. By February 1992 she established her own practice, Law Office of Patricia J. Worth, in her hometown. Patty loved her career. She loved being able to help people during the difficult times of their lives. She was well respected by her clients, colleagues, and throughout the legal community.
Patty had a distinguished career and was a leader within the community. She served as President of the Jackson County Bar Association from 1999-2000. She was on the Board of Directors for the Jackson AWARE Shelter for 20 years. Patty was the proud recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award. She demonstrated a strong work ethic and believed in giving back to her community.
In 1989 Patty’s sister, Cindy, arranged a blind date for her with an escape plan ready in the event things did not go well. Patty quickly realized a plan is not needed when you fall head over heels for someone. She married the love of her life, Joseph E. Ritter II, on July 10, 1993. Patty made a lot of good decisions throughout her life, but she shared that this was the best decision she ever made. For over 25 years Patty and Joe were best friends. They appreciated each other’s sense of humor, had many common interests, and brought balance to one another. Patty said Joe always made her laugh and we all need laughter in our lives. Life was even better once they became parents to their children, Joey and Rachel. They were Patty’s greatest pride and joy. Nothing was more important to her than her family.
Being a “house divided”, the Ritters love University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Big Ten sports. Patty took great delight whenever her beloved Wolverines came out on top. She was thrilled to cheer on the Maize and Blue when she attended the Rose Bowl in 1987 and 1998. She discovered in 1998 that the trip home is a lot more fun when your team wins.
Patty was an avid reader, enjoyed puzzles, traveling, and time with her family and friends. For the past 18 years Patty and her family attended Camp Michigania, the family camp owned by the University of Michigan. Week 5 will always be a special place where “campers become friends and friends become family.” She treasured this time and all that camp had to offer. She always looked forward to their annual trips to Siesta Key, Florida where they enjoyed the warm sunshine, sunsets on the beach, and time with Patty’s parents.
Patty was blessed to have wonderful friends. Although time and distance sometimes made it difficult to see one another, their friendships always picked up wherever they had left off. Her Faux Book Club rarely, if ever, discussed the assigned book as the evenings were spent eating, talking, and laughing. Patty commented that the greatest friends are our oldest friends.
Patty led by example. She taught her children to live life to the fullest, to work hard, and that a good education is invaluable. She taught them to have fun with friends, but above all keep family as the main priority. Patty was an inspiration to so many with her confidence, inner strength, and belief in equality. She was intelligent as well as sassy, quick-witted, and funny. Her spirit will continue to resonate with those who loved her.
Her legacy will surely be her fierce determination as she fought anal cancer in the last few years of her life. She had several courses of treatment and participated in three clinical trials in an effort to fight this disease. Cancer took her too soon and she will be deeply missed.
Patty was preceded in death by her loving parents William and Audrey Worth, sister Susan, father-in-law Dr. Frank Ritter, grandparents, Leo and Linna Worth and Aloysius and Agnes Forbes.
She is survived by her husband Joseph II, children Joseph III and Rachel, siblings William (Kathleen), Thomas (Pamela), Mary Smith, Cynthia, Kathleen (Kathleen), Amy, Caroline (Thomas) Wacker, James (Monique), and John, Mother-in-Law Gertrude, in-laws Raymond (Janet), Kathleen (Anthony) Soave, Lawrence, Mary Beth (Daniel) Ryan, Theresa (Ray) Schoonover, Sharon (Michael) Walper, and Michael (Colleen), as well as 26 nieces and nephews and 8 grandnieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 20 at the Desnoyer Funeral Home from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 21 before the Mass at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Patty’s life will take place on Monday, January 21 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Timothy MacDonald as the Celebrant. Private interment will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
There is little research for anal cancer. In lieu of flowers, Patty requested donations be given to support the Anal Cancer Research Fund. Checks may be made payable to “University of Michigan” and sent to Michigan Medicine Office of Development, 1000 Oakbrook Dr., Suite 100, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
