Betty Watson Dutton passed away the morning of January 15, 2019 at her home in Chesapeake, Virginia at the age of 86.

Betty is predeceased by her loving husband Laurence Raymond Dutton. They married on September 13, 1958 and shared a long happy life together until he passed on February 19, 2015. Together they created a loving family and lived the majority of their married life in Chesapeake, Virginia. They enjoyed being close to their children and grandchildren for almost 60 years.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Laurie Dutton Olson and her husband, Jeff as well as by her son Jeffrey Laurence Dutton and his wife, Shirl. Her four grandchildren, Katie, Carter, Ben and Luke, whom she adored.
Doyle and Glen Thackston of Shelby, North Carolina, and several nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law.

Betty was the eldest of four daughters born to Vera Deese Warner and Albert Oscar Watson.

Betty was born in Huntington, West Virginia on April 3, 1932, grew up in Carthage, North Carolina and lived in Aberdeen, North Carolina after high school until she married. She had several jobs but enjoyed being a librarian the most.

Betty was an avid reader often completing several books each week. She enjoyed gardening, her beach house in the Outer Banks and watching birds in her backyard. She had a lively and sometimes feisty spirit and was always protective of her family. Betty had a kind, generous heart and was quick to offer help to anyone in need. Most of all, she was a loving wife and dedicated mother. As her health began to decline, she reminded her children that although we “loved her more” she “loved us the most”. Her life’s work was service to her family and friends. Her strong spirit and loving heart will be greatly missed.

The funeral will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 3300 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, Virginia, 23703.
