Herbert Carlston “Carl” Matthews passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 50. He was born on October 18, 1968 in Granville County, NC, to Ralph A. Matthews and the late Beatrice Ann Smith Matthews. Carl was self-employed as a mechanic but was a true jack of all trades – including small engine & auto repair, auto paint & body, and landscaping. He was a superb uncle to his nieces and nephews and loved by many for his quick wit and jovial personality.

Cherishing Carl’s memories along with his father will be his brother, John Matthews (Louisa) of Greensboro; sisters Linda Surratt (Mac) of Oxford, Trina Ellis (Mark) of Henderson, and Wendy Matthews of Bullock. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Amanda, Ashley, Brandy, Laura, Deven, James, Jenny, Lauren-Juliette, Emily, Cheyenne, Demi Ayn and Katie, as well as great nieces and nephews, Masen, Kylie, Riley, Amani and Zayne. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Ann “Jenny” Link.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Stovall United Methodist Church with burial to follow at the Royster Family Cemetery in Bullock. The Reverend John Yount will officiate the service. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 19 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral, 703 Virginia Ave., Clarksville, VA from 6 – 8 pm.
