Marine Corps Cpl. Thiry was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. Thiry was killed by hostile fire in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Jesse was a 2000 graduate of Luxemburg-Casco High School in Luxemburg, Wisconsin. As his graduation drew near, he knew he wanted to join the Marines. Midway through high school, where he ran track and wrestled, he focused on getting in shape. Education became a part of his life as a Marine. He was a weapons instructor helping new recruits and was scheduled to be discharged in November. After that, he planned to marry his high school sweetheart. He had the safety of a stateside training assignment but he volunteered to go to Iraq and had only been there about a month when he was killed. Jesse wanted to serve and protect his country.
