Marine Corps Cpl. Thiry was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. After that, he planned to marry his high school sweetheart. He had the safety of a stateside training assignment but he volunteered to go to Iraq and had only been there about a month when he was killed. Jesse wanted to serve and protect his country.
