OTTUMWA – John David Hawley, 72, of Ottumwa passed away on January 15, 2019 at Hospice House.

David was born on Friday, September 13, 1946 in Ottumwa to John Carl and Mimmie M. Johnson Hawley.

David graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1964. His first job as a kid was as a Des Moines Register paper carrier. He served in the Army Reserve for six years. David worked for sixteen years at J.C. Penney in Ottumwa as well as Oskaloosa. He then worked for 36 years at Vaughn Motors as their Business Manager.

David was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Patrick Altar and Rosary Fellowship, Knights of Columbus General Shields Council #888 where he had been past financial secretary and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus General McMullen Assembly. He was also a 50-year member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion, Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties Auxiliary, OPL Friends and the SE Iowa I-Club. He was a Davis and Wapello County Hospice Volunteer where he was the 2016 volunteer of the year. However, his greatest achievement was as a 30-gallon donor for Mississippi Valley Blood Center.

David enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, visiting friends, and helping his good friend, Bob, at Hospice. He enjoyed many years of bowling in the Ottumwa Men’s and K.C.’s Leagues. He was a member of the All Sports 1 Bowling Team which won the 1995 Men’s State Bowling Division II Championship. Later, he took up golfing, and scored a hole-in-one in 1983. David was also an avid reader and loved tinkering on his two and one-third acre “farm.”

David is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara; a daughter Amy (Franz Alvarez) Hawley of New Rochelle, NY; a son, John (Andrea Kremer) Hawley of Chanhassen, MN; three grandchildren: Madelyn, Alex, and Zach; three sisters: Patricia M. Aldershof Wolfe of Sheridan, WY; JoAnn Aldershof R. Fannin of St. Paul, MN, and Barbara Hawley Reasoner of Folsom, CA; one brother-in-law, Joe (Diane) Craft of Ft. Worth, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday with the family present following the Wake Service until 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties, Shriners Hospitals for Children; and David & Barbara Hawley Scholarship Fund at Indian Hills Community College.
