Martha graduated from Lehighton Area High School in 1955 where she was the class Secretary and member of the Library Club and Debate Team. She was President of her class at the Allentown General Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated second in her class with her RN in 1958. Martha worked in obstetrics nursing at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and then at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia before moving back to Lehighton. From 1961 to 1976 Martha, along with her parents and husband Earl, operated Bordnar’s TV and Appliances (founded by her father in 1945). She and Earl assumed ownership and operated Bordnar’s from 1976 until the business’s closing in 1999.
Martha was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lehighton where she taught Sunday School, served on the Worship and Music Committee, and belonged to Women of the ELCA. Martha was an active member in the community, participating in the Lehighton Area Chamber of Commerce, Lehighton Woman’s Club and the Lehighton Lion and Lioness Clubs. She also served for a time as a Girl Scout leader, and participated as a member of the Safety Review Committee of Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital.
Family and friends were Martha’s passion and delight. She enjoyed spending summers and vacations with her family at Lake Mineola, Weir Lake, and also enjoyed various spots at the New Jersey shore including Wildwood, Long Beach Island and Cape May. She, together with her husband Earl, enjoyed many other memorable vacations and cherished times together with their beloved family.
Martha was a devoted wife to her husband Earl. They were married on June 20, 1959, and celebrated 59 years of marriage in 2018. In addition, Martha is survived by a sister Carol, wife of the late Bruce Hunsberger of Reading, PA; children Steven, fiancé of Leslie Dennis of Easton; Doris, wife of Jim Farley of Bath; grandchildren James Farley and fiancé Karlee Hantz of Cherryville; Matthew Farley and wife Alexis of Belcamp, MD; Michael Schneider and wife Nicole of Danielsville, and Jason Schneider of Catasauqua; Martha was blessed to have the opportunity to hold and love two great grandchildren, Alexander and Daniel, sons of Michael and Nicole Schneider.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 19th at 1PM at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 3rd & Iron Streets Lehighton with the Reverend Nancy Moore officiating, Committal Service to follow at Gnaden Huetten Cemetery. A Calling will be held Saturday, January 19th from Noon-1PM at the church, Schaeffer Funeral Home, Lehighton, is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made at www.schaefferfunerals.com
