Harvey Alexander McCollum was the son of Alexander McCollum and Phoebe Hammontree.

There are many facts about Harvey, his wives, and his descendants that are unclear. One of the reasons is that his children's birth years were different in almost every census. Therefore, I ask that you not copy (electronically or otherwise) and distribute the information below as the undisputed truth. I am continuing to research Harvey's marriages, his children, etc. I believe that some of Harvey's children may not have known who their biological mother was, especially if their mother had died when they were an infant and they were reared by a stepmother. Therefore, the information below is SUBJECT TO CHANGE as more information is uncovered. AT PRESENT, I believe that

Harvey was married to
1) Isabella Matilda (Beaty?) (the Beaty family was living one house away from Harvey and Isabella in 1860 in Blount County, TN. Ten years prior, the same Beaty family was living just across the TN line in Cherokee, North Carolina, and Isabella M Beaty was with them). However, a marriage record for Harvey and Isabella has yet to be found. Harvey and Isabella had a daughter Hettie and a son, David. Isabella M Beaty died in 1862 according to various Beaty family records and her father was named David; however, no records found so far show that Isabella M Beaty was married or had children. (I need to search for a marriage record in North Carolina counties near the Tennessee border... help here appreciated).

Children from this marriage:
a) Hettie A McCollum
b) David A McCollum

2) Sarah Penelope Hoggins (or Higgins) in 1864 in Blount County, TN. They had a daughter Louvenia and a son John. What became of this marriage and this spouse are unknown. I'm now considering the possibility that Louvenia's mother may have been Isabella (above), as Isabella M Beaty had a sister named Louvenia (sp?), and Louvenia's year of birth is believed to be about the same time as Isabella M Beaty (McCollum)'s death. According to my great grandfather Burt, he had a sister "Venie" (sp?).

Children from this marriage:
a) Louvenia McCollum
b) John Simpson McCollum

3) Mary M. Wimberly ?? (There is a marriage record for H A McCollum and Mary M. Wimberly in January 1867 in Blount County, TN.) Whether they did indeed marry and what became of her are unknown.

4) Mary Frances Shope in August 1867 in Monroe County, TN. They had children:

a) Mary "Monie" McCollum (died age 1) (this may have been the child of another Mary Shope and unknown father)
b) Julia Eliza(beth) McCollum
c) Lennie McCollum
d) Isabelle McCollum
e) Ida Lue McCollum
f) William Burton McCollum

I have seen "information" that has been perpetuated indicating that Harvey A McCollum was married to an Isabella, Mary M Wimberly with a date of marriage in 1867. This makes absolutely NO sense to me, as Harvey was with Isabella in the 1860 census (before the 1867 marriage record to Mary M Wimberly). I've never known anyone to have a comma in his or her name, either. Harvey's last marriage was definitely to Mary Frances Shope, according to their son Burt.

In an 1895 application for Civil War pension, Harvey A McCollum states that he has a wife and 9 children... 6 girls and 3 boys. My great grandfather Burt also stated in early 1960s that he'd had 2 half-brothers, John and David, and the sisters named above (with the exception of Hettie, whom he perhaps never knew due to the age difference).

[The above is based upon research by F. Bryan using census, marriage, and death records, as well as information William Burton McCollum (Harvey's youngest son) gave to a granddaughter shortly before his own death in 1964. Please contact me with additional facts, corrections, or family records if you are a descendant of any of Harvey's children]
