Connecticut Governor. Moving to Connecticut, in 1864, he was president of the Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company, (1865-78) and treasurer of the Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank of Middletown. He was Mayor of Middletown, (1872-74), president of the Middlesex County Agricultural Society, in 1875 and a member of the Connecticut Senate, (1887-89). In 1894, he was elected as a Republican the 56th Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1897. During his term, legislation was passed that prohibited the use of convict labor in the production of food, drugs and tobacco products. Also a bill was enacted that disallowed children under the age of 14 from working and a bill was constituted that enabled a worker's right to join a labor union. After leaving office, he active in business ventures and was vice-president of the Connecticut Rifle Association.
