On the site where two young men died on Route 590 early Sunday, a tribute, to young lives cut short.
Henry Rivera, 18 and Pedro Hernandez, 20 were killed in the crash. Friends and families of both planned visits to the site.
"It will never be the same," said Stefan Carbonell, a classmate of Rivera's at Eastridge High in Irondequoit. I don't think there's anything anyone will ever do that'll heal our hearts."
Henry's family joined their son's friends at a memorial along Route 590 in Brighton.
"This is the first time though here," said Henry's father, Henry Rivera, Sr. "It will probably be the last time because this is going to be too unbearable."
His father says Henry wanted to study criminal justice and had recently taken the firefighter's exam.
So much promise, in a life cut short.
"I mean, this is not what parents are supposed to be doing at this time," said the elder Rivera. "I'm supposed to be getting a limousine for my son for his graduation, not a hearse."
Friends hugged and wept as they remembered Rivera. Denzel Jones, his best friend since 8th grade, broke down as he described his departed friend.
"He was known for ‘the cheese,' the smile," said Jones. "Just getting crazy, just doing something together."
The memories of both young men live on, in the memorial to the two; in the tattoos many of Henry's friends got right after his death. For Stefan Carbonnel, in the decision to hang with his friend at the movies Saturday night, hours before the crash.
"I guess God allowed me to see him one more time," he said. "He just needed one of his angels, I guess."
Through the grief, Rivera's family hopes some good may come -- that another tragedy can be avoided.
If you want to honor my son's memory, please do the right Thing," said Henry Rivera. "Think twice before you do anything this graduation."
"Look out for each other."
