July 6, 1931 - January 14, 2019

A. Charles Knowles, Jr., 87, of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 14, 2019 at Piedmont Midtown Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Charles was born July 6, 1931 in Columbus, GA, son of the late Elise Byrd Knowles and A. Charles Knowles, Sr. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1948 and married the love of his life, LaVerne Booth in 1949.
Upon the death of his father in 1954, Charles continued the Knowles Radio & TV business and in the 1970’s he purchased Consolidated Brands Awards in Ellerslie, GA. He and his wife also owned and operated a horse show management business for many years. His lifelong love for horses has now passed on to three generations. He was an accomplished pilot who enjoyed flying as a hobby in his earlier years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing and playing golf.
He served as a Harris County Commissioner for 8 years and as President of the Association of County Commissioner of GA. Charles was Past Master of Rose Hill Lodge #484 F.&A.M., Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of GA F.&A.M., a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Personal Representative Emeritus to the Sovereign Grand Inspector General for GA, member of Darley Chapter #7 R.A.M., Hope Chapter #4 Royal & Select Masters, St. Aldemar Commandery #3, Charter Member of Muscogee Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, Al Sihah Shrine Temple in Macon, GA, and a Senior DeMolay with 72 years of service.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby McClung.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, LaVerne Booth Knowles of Columbus, GA, two daughters, Kathy Knowles Ninas (Russell) of Phenix City, AL and Linda Knowles Nash (Bobby) of Marietta, GA. His grandchildren include Clay Ninas (Mallory), Katie Webb (Ty), Jason Ninas (Jennifer) all of Phenix City, AL, Daina Wooten (Mark) of Salem, AL, Amy Wall (Chad) of Decatur, GA, Alicia Fisher (Will) of Knoxville, TN. He had 11 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ted Collins, Joe Denson, Phil Harris, Doyle Hatfield, Danny Hinson, Torrey Knight, Joe Oelgoetz, and Ed Tante. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Grand Lodge Officers and Past Grand Masters of the State of GA.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907. Services will be Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home with Reverend David Helms officiating. Graveside Masonic Rites to follow at Parkhill Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Georgia Masonic Children’s Home Endowment Fund, PO Box 4665 Macon, GA 31208 or the Scottish Rite Foundation of Georgia, 1690 Peachtree St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.
