With his family and friends by his side, Colonel Brian P. Cooper passed away peacefully on November 22, 2018 at his home in Austin, TX, where he lived after retiring from an outstanding 26 year U.S. Army career. He was born February 21, 1942 in Brecksville, Ohio. He graduated from Parma High School and attended The Ohio State University where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1973 Cum Laude.

In 1967 he was drafted into the United States Army. Colonel Cooper served as Platoon Leader and Company Commander of the 1st Battalion 67th Armor Brigade 2nd Armor Division in Ft Hood, Texas. In 1969 Colonel Cooper was assigned to South Vietnam with the MACV III Corps, Upon completion of Officer Candidate School he held various positions of responsibility and command primarily in Armor, Operations, Plans and Training in the United States and Germany. His duties included Troop Commander in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Bamberg Germany, Battalion Commander of the 2nd Battalion 13th Armor at Ft. Knox, KY and Regimental Executive Officer of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment (Brave Rifles) in Ft. Bliss, TX. Colonel Cooper’s final assignment before retiring was Garrison Commander of Ft McNair in Washington DC. Colonel Cooper also attended the Army Command and General Staff College in Ft Leavenworth, KS and the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA.

The awards and decorations that honor Colonel Cooper’s service include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device, Meritorious Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal (3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.

In his retirement he was an avid golfer and had a deep respect for the outdoors and our Nation’s national parks, visiting and exploring them as often as he could. More than anything he enjoyed spending time with his friends and his family, especially his daughters and his grandchildren.

Colonel Cooper is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Amelse (Robert), Gwendolynn Pirisino (John), and Katherine Eastridge (Michael); 4 Grandchildren, two sisters, Kay A. Weiden (Tom) and Linda A. Garner (Ron), his former wife Lynn Cooper, and many nieces and nephews and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his Father, CDR Elmer William Cooper, Jr., his mother Katherine Rose Cooper and his brother Tom P. Cooper.

Services and Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Funeral Honors on May 1, 2019 at 10:45 am.
