Joel Dean Bailey, age 71, of Buford, Ga., passed away at his home in Foscoe, North Carolina on January 10, 2019. He was born July 19, 1947 in Ware Shoals, South Carolina to Joel C. and Inez (Ricketts) Bailey. He was a 1969 graduate of The Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina. Following college he enrolled in law school at the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1973. He then moved to Beaufort, South Carolina where he practiced for nearly 45 years before retiring in 2017. He was a past President of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a select national organization of trial attorneys. A dedicated trial lawyer and exceptional story teller, he was known for his quick wit, his sense of humor and his generous heart. More important to him than his many professional accolades was the special pride he took in helping everyday people when they needed it the most. He remained a loyal alumnus and avid supporter of The Citadel and cherished his place in its Long Gray Line. Above all of this, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sons Chandler (Beth) Bailey and Jason Bailey; and his grandsons Gus and Ladd Bailey. Family and friends are invited to eat, drink and celebrate his life at the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club between 3-5 pm on Monday, January 14, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in honor of Joel D. Bailey to The Citadel Foundation, K Company, Class of 1969, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409-6230.
