Johnnie was born January 2, 1934, in Benton, Tennessee, daughter of the late Luther Garren and Mary Lee Yates Garren. She was a graduate of East Tennessee State University-1955, one of the first women graduates of The Citadel's Masters Program. Johnnie taught English for 30 years at St. Andrew's Junior High, St. Andrew's High School and Middleton High School and was a former Teacher of the Year at Middleton. She was an Elder and circle leader at Westminster Presbyterian Church and past president of The Garden Club of Charleston, and former president of the Ladies Exchange Club Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Thomas L. Harvey of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Sandra Pennekamp (Tim) and Ellyn Winkles (Dan) all of Charleston; brother, James LeRon Garren, and sister, Billie Carol Hamby both of TN; four grandchildren, Tap Pennekamp, Alex Pennekamp (Lindley), Josh Winkles (Logan), and Claire Winkles. She was preceded in death by a sister Joann Fennell.
