Stanley Dewey Carter

1923–2019

Stanley Dewey Carter, age 95, of Sandy Hook, passed away on Monday morning, January 14, 2019 at his residence, after a brief illness.

Mr. Carter was born October 31, 1923, in Hamburg, Alabama the son of the late Sanford and Mae Horton Carter.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Carter in 2009; he was married to his sweetheart for 60 years; two brothers, Tennyson Carter and Edgar Lee Carter; one sister Ramona Carter, and one son-in-law, Garry D. Littleton. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Stanley cherished working on his farms with his wife and children where they grew tobacco, cattle and large gardens. He was a blessing to his family, raising seven children and spending time with his grandchildren.


Stanley was a World War II Veteran, serving in Germany, France and Belgium. He crossed the Atlantic on the "The Queen Mary" troop ship which was destined for the War. He spent two years and ten months in the service of the United States Army and attained the rank of T-4. He received the American Theatre Ribbon, EAM Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal World War II. He was proud of his country and always flew an American flag in his front yard.


Stanley retired from the Corps of Engineers at Grayson Reservoir after 16 years of outstanding service. He was a man of many talents such as welding, electricity, mechanics and etc. He and his brother Fred bought electricity into many homes in Elliott County as it became a commodity of the future.


Surviving include three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Elijah Hall, Jr. of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, Judy and Bret Hardwick of Ponce Inlet, Florida, Lovena and Ronald Bailey of Pembroke Pines, Florida. Four sons and daughters-in-law, Paul D. Carter, Larry Joe and Ella Carter, Roger D. Carter all of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, Raymond A. and Debbie Carter of Lovely, Kentucky; One brother, Fred Carter of New Carlisle, Ohio. Fourteen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.
