Surrounded by her family, Rita Marie (Metzler) Carr, 91, from Collinsville and more recently Swansea, Illinois, returned to her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 10, 2019, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Mrs. Carr was born on February 1st, 1927, in St. Louis to Curtis V. and Louise (DeHekker) Metzler. She was a graduate of Southwest High School in St. Louis and Southern Illinois University (B.A. Fine Arts) in Edwardsville, Illinois. On February 15, 1947, she married Joseph C. Carr, from East. St. Louis, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 59 years, Joseph; daughters, Rita Marie Carr of Los Angeles and Marin County, Calif. and Kathleen Ann Carr of Los Angeles; and daughter-in-law Marcia K. Carr of St. Louis; her brothers Curtis “Brother” Metzler, of St. Louis and Donald Metzler of Atlanta; and beloved sister Lorraine Richardson of St. Louis.
She is survived by sons Joseph C. Carr, Jr. and Joanie Carr of St. Louis and Michael C. and Nancy Carr of Carbondale; daughters, Terry and Mary L. (Carr) Harp of Swansea and Jeanne M. Carr of Hollywood, Calif.; grandchildren, Timothy Carr, Kathryn Carr, Christine Carr, Jordan Harp, Mike and Carlin (Harp) Little, Michael Harp, Addison Neville, Eden Neville; sister-in-law Dorothy (Carr) Quinn, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Carr believed strongly that every minute of her life was a gift which had been given to her from God. She continually reaffirmed her desire to live. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Maryville and later St. Theresa Catholic Church in Belleville. She excelled as an artist, painter sculptor (metals, wood and stone). She played and taught piano and voice (soprano), and performed in a Broadway Tour production of The Sound of Music as well as locally with her husband in many St. Louis area venues. Her hobbies included tap dancing, singing and playing violin, organ and accordion.
Services: Visitation at the SCHRADER Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Rd., Ballwin, Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 4:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. Funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 505 Fountains Parkway, Fairview Heights, Illinois 62208 on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00a.m. With a visitation at the church on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 10:00a.m. till 11:00a.m. Interment will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
