Larry Wayne Higgins was born in Grenada, Mississippi. He was the only son of the late Gaulena Earl Thompson Higgins and Tommie Buford Higgins Jr. He was the fifth of six children, Sandra Miller, Barbara Hall, Rhonda Gillis, and the late Carolyn Craft and Linda Worley.

Larry was a graduate of Arkansas State University with a Bachelors of Science {1973} as well as a Masters Degree {1975}. He began his life of service to children as a special education teacher in Parkin, Arkansas. He then moved on as the Director of Special Education for the Van Burn and Alma School Districts while earning a Specialist Degree from the University of Arkansas. Larry married Kathleen Ann Lyman during that time and they moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he earn his Doctorate Degree {1983} at St. Louis University. Larry found a place to call home in the Fort Zumwalt School District where he worked from 1980 through 2006, starting as a Special Education Teacher, moving on to become Special Education Director, and then Elementary School Principal at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, and finally closed out his journey with the Fort Zumwalt Family as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. During his tenure as an administrator, Larry was responsible for writing the first federal/state grants to start the district’s remedial reading, gifted, and A+ programs. He also wrote the curriculum that expanded the district’s Outdoor Education Program (5th Grade Camp) to encompass all Fort Zumwalt Schools and implemented the district’s Orchestra and Vocational Resource Programs. He truly loved children and being able to be a positive influence on the live of so many young people brought joy to his life.

Larry is survived by his wife Kathy, his two sons, Matthew Lyman and Anthony James, 2 daughters-in-law, Katey and Jennifer, and four grandchildren, Brooke Elizabeth, Madison Nicole, Jayden Gregory, and James Anthony. His one last desire was to be around to watch his grandchildren grow into the amazing people he knew they would become, he will now be doing that by God’s side. In lieu of flowers, the family requests continued prayers and donations to be sent to the American Cancer Society.

SERVICES: A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 2 PM – 6 PM at Hutchens-Stygar Funeral and Cremation Center, 5987 Mid Rivers Mall Dr., (St. Charles).
