Leona Winter, 93, passed away June 3, 2012, at Dorian Place Assisted Living Facility in Ontario, Ore. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 28, 2012, at Malheur Butte Baptist Church.
Leona was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Jewell County, Kan., to Lewis Alfred and Leta Grace Rightmeier and was an “only sister” to her six brothers. She married Harlan Wilson Winter in 1936 on her high school graduation day. Later they moved to Oregon after the birth of their first child, Jon Richard. They settled in Nyssa where they farmed and added Helen Margaret (Pegi) and Harlan Sidney to their family. Leona worked at M&W Market and later for the local dentist, Dr. Olson. In the early ’60s they moved to Lincoln Heights between Ontario, Nyssa and Vale and added Mary Jean to their family. Leona enjoyed giving piano lessons and serving her local church family as an organist/pianist. She took special pride in winning organ competitions and continuing to improve her skills. A great joy of hers was tending her beloved roses and rooting for her favorite golf, tennis and ice skating stars. Leona and Wilson were married for 55 years when he passed on ahead of her in 1991, and her daughter Pegi followed in 2008.
Leona will be remembered by her children, Jon (Jean) Winter, Harlan Winter, and Mary Jean (Keith) Schuller; grandchildren, JP, Jackie, James, Jeff, Joe, Suzie, Matt, Nikki, KTrina, Mindi, Trev, Zach, Joss, and Emily; and by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
