Ernest Evans, Jr.
Bro. Ernest Evans, Jr., of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the age of 73. He was born June 17, 1945, in Pine Bluff, the only child of Ernest, Sr., and Annie Elizabeth (Jackson) Evans.
Bro. Evans was a Missionary Baptist minister over 52 years, ministering at Marvel, McCrory, St. Claire, Missouri, Old Glaise, Heber Springs, Hickory Grove, Central Baptist Church in Newport, and Tuckerman. He was currently attending Lakeside Missionary Baptist Church in Newport. He especially enjoyed traveling and leading mission trips, visiting Israel 6 times, as well as 40 countries, and 40 of the United States. Bro. Evans was a chaplain for the Arkansas Department of Corrections for 10 years at the Grimes Unit.
He was a private pilot, and member of the Airport Commission. Bro. Evans was a former member of the Dallas Trade Market Board of Directors, and was a classically trained pianist. He enjoyed flying, coin collecting, and eating a good steak.
When he was told he had cancer, Bro. Evans interrupted the doctor and began witnessing to him. As he sat on his bedside, he told his doctor and family, “God is with us at birth, and will be with us at death. The apostle Paul said we will be in the valley, and today, we’re in a valley.”
He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family, but none more than the lady he lovingly referred to as, “his Princess”, for the last 40 years.
Bro. Evans was preceded in death by his parents; and his son-in-law, Roger Breckenridge.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Wilma Jean (Gates) Turner Evans, of the home; one son, Brian Evans and wife, Melissa, of Cabot, Arkansas; one daughter, Paula Breckenridge of Newport; four grandchildren, Mindy Breckenridge Hestir and husband, Max, Andrew Breckenridge and wife, Rose, Laina Evans, and Landon Evans; and two great-grandchildren, Ayva and Jaxton Breckenridge.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Don Yancey officiating. Interment will be at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan at 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
