Richard was brought up to enjoy the outdoors and spent many weekends and vacations traveling to numerous national and state parks, fishing, and camping with his family. He joined Troop 400 of the Boy Scouts at 11 and attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 13, attended Philmont Scout Ranch at 14 and was a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow.

Richard graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth in 1975, then from East Texas State University with a degree in real estate/finance and was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Later he became a real estate appraiser and owned Darnell Appraisal Service for almost 30 years.

Richard was an avid gambler and enjoyed time spent in Las Vegas and other casinos across the country. He and his brother, Sam, visited almost every main horse racing track in North America. Richard was a dog lover and treated his furry friends just like family, actually better.

SURVIVORS: His soulmate and love of his life, "Lucy"; daughters, Amber Lancaster and husband, Jason, Crystal Clayton and husband, Jason; grandsons, Hayden and Beckham; brother, Sam Darnell and wife, Terri; sister, Ann Gabbert and husband, Adam; nieces, Amanda Stiefer and Maryann Sutton; great-nieces and great-nephew; best friends forever, Bryan and Johnny Williams, Tony Martin, Phil Allen, and Gary Greenwood.
