AGNES M. BAUER

Agnes M. Bauer, 96, of rural Newton, died on March 28, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center in Manitowoc. Cremation has taken place at All Care Cremation Center in Manitowoc and a private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Agnes was born on January 24, 1919 in her parent's general store in the Town of Newton. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Agnes Guidinger Bonde. She attended Elm Grove School and St. Boniface Catholic School in Manitowoc.
Agnes married Charles H. Bauer on June 21, 1941 at St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Osman. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1978. Agnes and her husband farmed on the Bauer homestead first located on Silver Creek Road and later on State Highway 42 in the Town of Newton. She was the proud mother of ten children.
Agnes was a farmer most of her life. She milked cows and even drove a team of horses when she was young. She always worked hard, gardening, canning or making homemade bread or homemade soap. Agnes enjoyed her yearly tradition of crocheting Christmas ornaments for every member of the her family. She also made teddy bears for all of her grandchildren. Her family will miss receiving their birthday call every year. She was notorious for recording family history and local history with her camera. Agnes will also be remembered for her love of scrapbooking, knitting and sewing, along with the hard to find Bent and Wiggley puzzle books. She was also an avid traveler, touring most of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska as well as Europe.
Agnes also participated in the Newton Volunteer Fire Fighters Parade where for more than 27 years, she walked and biked in costumes she designed and made herself. According to the local newspapers, Agnes was considered the heart of the Newton Parade. Each day, Agnes started with a bike ride or a walk, followed by her prayers. Her faith was very important to her. She always reminded her family to say "Thank you to God every day". When three of her sons were serving in Vietnam, she kept three candles burning until their return.
Agnes was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton. She was an avid polka dancer and enjoyed her music. Her family will miss her Christmas parties and Mother's Day get-togethers, often with more than 100 family members at her house.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joan Lenzner, Mary Ann and Tom Hall and Agnes and Larry Schmitz; six sons and five daughters-in-law, Jerome and Val Bauer, Roger and Sharon Bauer, Charles and Cheryl Bauer, David Bauer, Thomas and Judy Bauer, Gary and Ginny Bauer; 33 grandchildren; 60 great grandchildren with one on the way and 10 great great grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Bauer; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Eleanor Bonde and Marie and Warren (Bonde) Shallue and one brother, Raymond Bonde.
Memorials may be made in Agnes' name to the Manitowoc County Historical Society. The Pfeffer Funeral Home and All Care Cremation Center in Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
