Silas Earl Byrd, age 95, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 while at Community Hospice of NE Florida.

Earl was born in Patterson, Georgia on April 18, 1919 and moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1954. He was a public school teacher and administrator, receiving his B.S. degree from Georgia Teachers College (Georgia Southern) and his M.A. from Peabody College, where he met his wife-to-be. He served schools in Patterson, Ga., Hastings, FL, and 23 years at Kirby-Smith Junior High School in Jacksonville. He retired in 1977 at the age of 58. He was a veteran of WWII, being called to serve in the U. S. Army the same month he graduated from college. Earl was a member of Lake Forest Baptist Church for many years where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and co-director of Talentseekers. At the time of his death he was a member of Deermeadows Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie H. Byrd, three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his children; Timothy (Darlene), Janice Trevett (Harry), six grandchildren; Ryan Trevett (Keri), Brandon Byrd, Rachel Rall (Jon), Blaine Byrd, Brett Trevett (Patty), Brooke Byrd and great-grandchildren; Abigail and Tessa Rall and Mollie Trevett.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed summers spent at his home in North Carolina, camping with the Good Sam Club, gardening, long walks and spending time with family. Earl will be remembered as a kind, gentle, devout Christian man and will be greatly missed. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Community Hospice of NE Florida and to Jackie Parker at Taylor Manor, along with others, for the exemplary care of Earl for the seven years he lived there.

A private memorial will take place at a later date in accordance with his final wishes where his remains will be scattered around his property in the mountains of North Carolina.
