James is the 4th child and 2nd oldest son of Robert Gillaspy, Sr. (b.1793,VA) and Nancy Montgomery (b.~1795).

On March 15, 1849 James married Elizabeth Gorrell, daughter of William D. and Almiran Gorrell. The marriage was registered in Jennings County, IN. To this union five children were born: Mary Jane; Rhoda Ann; Robert W.; Almira; and Ira E.

Elizabeth died in ~1878 at ~50yrs.

On November 18, 1883 James married Rachel Ann King-Bedel.
