The suicide of Wilson attracted considerable attention because the man in his dying statement said he commited act because he was unable to secure work. Wilson inflicted the fatal wounds at noon on December 18, but lived until 10 o'clock that night. For several hours he lay in his room on Evans street, where he was discovered late that evening by neighbors. He was taken to the Burge Deaconess hospital, where every effort was made to save his life, but he died while on the operating table. Wilson lived long enough, however, to tell the attending physician that the wounds were self-inflicted.
