Martha was the daughter of Alexander and Mary (Price) Gotham, also buried here. She lived her entire life in Logan County . Her mother died when she was just 6 yrs old, and her father never remarried. She had an older sister Amanda who died as a small child and is buried here, next to her mother. She also according to the 1830 and 1840 census, had another sister and a brother that both apparently died young, but I have not found names for them as yet.

Martha Ann, was the mother of 9 children, of which only 4 lived to adulthood and married, and she was married 4 times...
1st in 1848 to William P. King (1819-1853), the son of Daniel and Isabella King, by whom she had 3 children; James Mountigue (1849-1926), Mary Elizabeth (1851-1857), William P. Jr. (1853-1857). Only James lived to adulthood and married and raised a family in the area.
2nd in 1857 to Shelby R. Gorham, who was her 1st cousin, the son of Shelby Sr. and Mary (King) Gorham, by whom she had 2 children; Fannie C. (1859-_ _ _ _) and Robert T. (1861-1924). Fannie apparently died before adulthood, but Robert married and had 1 daughter.
3rd in 1864 to Harvey T. Gorham who was her 1st cousin once removed, the son of Elijah and Elizabeth (Neal) Gorham. The marriage ended in divorce when Harvey was committed to the mental hospital in Hopkinsville and there were no children from this union.
4th in 1868 to Elishia W. Dodson, of whom I have yet to find parents for. The marriage record says this was his 2nd marriage and her 3rd (apparently she did not count the short marriage to Harvey) . I do not know who E. W.'s 1st wife was or if there were children. By E. W. Martha had 4 sons ; William Martin (1869-1909), John "Johnny" (1871-1891), Infant son (twin of John) (1871-1871) and Henry (1874-1951). William married and had 7 children, and lived his married life and died in Adams Roberts Co., TN. Henry moved to Ohio and raised a family also.

Martha was a strong and independent woman for the times. Land and Tax records show she bought and sold much property on her own during her lifetime, which was unusual for a woman in her day. She ran a large farm on her own for many years, and left an estate to her 4 youngest sons, assigning her oldest son James, guardian to his under age 1/2 brothers at her death.

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled

Gravesite Details

Stone was still standing and could be read in 2008 when we took pictures. Martha's grave is about 50 feet north of her mother and sisters grave. Her father is also buried here but there is no longer a stone marking his grave.
