Sir Michael Francis Atiyah, OM FRS FRSE FMedSci FAA FREng. British-Lebanese mathematician, winner of the two highest awards in mathematics, the Fields Medal (1966) and the Abel Award (2004 ). He was the son of Edward and Jean (Levens) Atiyah. He married Lilly Brown in 1955. His work with Dr. Isadore Singer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led to the expansion of string theory and gauge theory as ways to understand the structure and dynamics of the universe, and has provided powerful tools for both mathematicians and theoretical physicists.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lilly*; and eldest son, John (2002). Surviving are his sons, David and Robin; and three grandchildren.
