Robert E. “Bob” Barger, age 97, formerly of Point Place, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Spring Meadows Nursing Home. He was born November 26, 1921 to Aaron and Martha Alice (Pope) Barger in Hillsboro, Ohio. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII. He was a pilot and flight instructor at several bases across the U.S. Bob was a 65 year member of the American Legion Post 335, serving as Senior Past Commander. Bob attended The Ohio State University and most recently was the oldest graduate of the University of Toledo at 96 years old. He retired from Canon Paper after 43 years and then owned and operated his own company for many years after. Bob was a longtime member of the Toledo Club of Printing House Craftsmen and the Advertising Club. He was also a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Bob was a golf enthusiast and played tennis up into his 80’s. He always said “Old golfers never die, they just putter out.” Bob was a sports fan, especially of The Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Toledo. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived by his loving granddaughter and caretaker, Kim Marie (Terry) Lanning; grandsons, Kevin (Kathy) Mieczkowski and Grant (Beth) Grohowski; great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Sandra, Alyssa, Kyle, and Kelsie; great-great-grandchildren, Kalie, Jason Jr., Alijah and Anastazia; sons-in-law, Leonard (Elaine) Mieczkowski and Carl (Becky) Grohowski; and many other family members and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne G. Barger; brother, Thomas Barger; daughters, Sandra Grohowski and Nancy Mieczkowski Briggs; grandson, Stan Grohowski; great-granddaughter, Kayla Mieczkowski; and great-grandson-in-law, Jason Wood.

The family will receive guests on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 3 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer – Southwest Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will take place Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4703 N. Summit St., Toledo 43611.
Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park.
