Ruth LeVey Gill
September 21, 1922 - January 11, 2019
Obituary by Martin-Dugger Funeral Home

Ruth LeVey Gill was born in Carter,(sic) OK to Martha "Mattie" Branham Long and Louis Houston Long on September 21, 1922 and passed away in the Grace Living Center, El Reno, OK at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 21 days.

After the death of her mother in the mid 1930's she went from Wichita Falls to live with her aunt and uncle, Agnes and Ike Long and their daughter, Norma, at Carter, OK. Agnes later married Charles Francis and they all lived on a ranch south of Texola. Ruth graduated from Texola High School in 1941. She married the love of her life, George Albert Gill, who was working on the ranch, on June 20, 1942 in Elk City, OK. George joined the US Marine Corps in September 1942 and served in the South Pacific until he was discharged in October 1945. The family moved to Satanta, KS where George worked for United Carbon Plant for several years. In 1949 they moved to an 800 acre ranch in the Breaks south of Erick to eke out a living with 4 small children, but when they welcomed their fifth child it was time to return to more fertile ground in Sayre and Mayfield. In 1955 the family moved to Erick, where all 5 children graduated from Erick High School and attended the First Baptist Church. In the 1980s and 1990s, George and Ruth were active members of the Elks Lodge in Elk City, OK. Ruth was a faithful partner, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was happiest at home, loved her family and always wanted to be near them. Friends and family were always welcome in her home and at her table. After her husband passed away in 1996 she continued hosting large family reunions on their farm east of Erick. She was an optimist, kind-hearted, laughed easily, and followed her own sage advice of "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Ruth was baptized on the banks of a river at the age of seventeen and attended the First Baptist Church in Erick, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mattie and Houston Long, Aunt Agnes, her husband George, 3 brothers Donavon, Louis, and Donel, a son Cole R. Gill, a daughter Karen Birdwell, and one grandson Matthew.

She is survived by a sister/cousin Norma Lee Smotherman; 3 children, Albert Gill of Denver, CO, David L. Gill and wife Sevilla of Pensacola, FL, Audrey Stephens and husband Daryle of Mustang, OK; 14 grandchildren, Agnes, Robert, Annalyn, Joseph, Audie, John Allen, Misty, Cody, Christopher, Nicole, David Jr., William, Richard and John and a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM. Thursday, January 17. 2019 at Erick First Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Kleckner officiating. Interment will follow at Erick Cemetery.
